FAQ: Botox

Botox is the first injectable neuromodulator product ever FDA-approved for reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. It contains botulinum toxin A, the active ingredient, along with accessory proteins. Since 2002, Botox has helped millions of men and women reduce wrinkles in three main areas:

  • Between the eyebrows
  • Forehead
  • Around the eyes (crow’s feet)

Botox is widely considered a great option for patients who want to reduce wrinkles without having to go through surgery or invasive treatments.

Botox intercepts nerve signals to the facial muscles at the injection site. This makes it harder for you to move the muscle, and the lack of muscle contractions means fewer lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Botox lasts for up to four months in most patients. For some patients, it may be shorter or longer than this. If you have Botox injections on a regular basis, your treated muscles may eventually weaken and therefore require less Botox, less often, to stay wrinkle-free.

There are two other neuromodulator products available today, Dysport® and Xeomin®. Although the differences between the products are generally subtle, there may be times when Dysport or Xeomin is a better choice than Botox.

For example, it’s possible to develop a resistance to Botox (and also, to Dysport) over time. The resistance isn’t caused by the botulinum toxin A but by the accessory proteins. If Botox or Dysport stops working for you because of resistance, Xeomin may be a good alternative since it’s a “naked” injectable with no accessory proteins.

Generally, Botox and Dysport last around the same amount of time (about four months), with Xeomin having a bit less longevity (closer to three months).

There may be cases where your unique body chemistry simply responds to one product better than the other, so CNS Center of Arizona & Medical Aesthetics offers all three neuromodulators so you can choose what works best for you.

Botox can be a great complement to dermal fillers or laser skin revitalization. Botox takes care of the fine lines and wrinkles from muscle movement, and fillers or skin revitalization takes care of the deeper volume-related folds and lines. Combining Botox and fillers is called a liquid facelift.
