Sun Damage Q & A

What causes sun damage?

UV rays, which can come from both the sun and indoor tanning, are the main culprit of sun damage. When your skin absorbs UV rays, the melanin that adds color to your skin accumulates. Your skin’s elastin, which helps keep the skin taut and elastic, is also damaged by UV rays.

These two factors eventually cause obvious sun damage, including lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

What are the signs of sun-damaged skin?

The signs of sun damage go way beyond sunburns. In fact, many of the most common skin problems and concerns are directly tied to sun damage. Some signs of sun-damaged skin include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loose skin
  • Brown spots (age spots, liver spots, freckles)
  • Dry or rough skin

Usually, the signs of sun damage don’t start to show until adulthood, often until middle age. That’s why it’s important to take good care of your skin and use proper sun protection, even during childhood.

How is sun damage treated?

At CNS Center of Arizona & Medical Aesthetics, the experienced medical aesthetics providers use the industry-leading Cynosure Icon system to resolve sun damage problems on your face, chest, arms, legs, or other areas.

The Icon’s fractional laser delivers short energy pulses into the melanin clusters that make up your age spots, freckles, or other pigmentation. The energy shatters the melanin into dust-like particles, and you’ll flush these out through normal waste disposal processes.

The Icon laser also induces new collagen growth below your skin. The collagen gradually fills in fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage. Over time, all the signs of sun damage fade away until you have healthy and young-looking skin again.

How many sun damage laser treatments do I need?

Usually, only a few Icon treatments are needed to reduce or eliminate pigmentation like freckles or age spots. But, If you have multiple sun damage concerns, you may need more treatments. Icon laser treatments are usually at least a month apart.

You don’t have to live with sun damage any longer. Get the fresh, young, and healthy skin you deserve by booking an appointment online or calling CNS Center of Arizona & Medical Aesthetics today.
